Feature · Slack Workflow

Slack workflows that reach past Slack to the record graph.

Slack Workflow Builder is a credible lightweight tool for Slack-contained automations. The limit shows when the workflow needs to read or write a CRM record, enforce an SLA, or persist state across days. Strkr pairs with Slack to run the workflows that span both surfaces: CRM triggers, approvals, notifications, and action buttons from one platform.

What Slack Workflow Builder covers

The scope of the native tool.

Slack Workflow Builder is a lightweight native automation tool. It handles Slack-contained workflows well. The scope is intentional: it is for Slack-centric work, not cross-system automation.

Form-to-channel

User fills form, message posts.

The core pattern. A user fills a form in Slack, a message posts to a channel with the submission. Great for pizza orders, time-off requests, simple intake. Not designed for CRM record creation.

Scheduled messages

Daily standup reminder.

Scheduled messages fire on a cadence: daily standup prompt, weekly reminder, monthly roll-up. Good for team ritual automation. Limited for business workflows that need external data.

Welcome new member

Channel-join trigger.

New channel member triggers a welcome message with pointers to resources. Good for team-local onboarding automation. Does not integrate with HR systems or CRM contact records.

Simple approvals

Request, approve in-thread.

Simple approval workflows contained in Slack: user requests something, approver clicks button, result posts in thread. Good for internal low-stakes approvals. Not integrated with CRM deals or formal approval chains.

What it does not do

CRM, SLA, durable state.

Slack Workflow Builder does not read or write CRM records, does not enforce SLAs with escalation, does not persist state across days reliably, and does not integrate with external systems in sophisticated ways. These are not design flaws; they are intentional scope limits.

When it is enough

Slack-contained team rituals.

For Slack-contained team rituals (standup, PTO requests, kudos, pizza orders), Slack Workflow Builder is enough and the right tool. Teams reaching for it to run cross-system workflows usually hit its limits within three months.

Where Slack workflows need to reach

Six patterns that span past Slack.

The valuable Slack workflow patterns in a mid-market business reach past Slack to the CRM, the ERP, or the ticketing system. These six are the shapes teams actually need.

Deal-stage notifications

Big deal moved to Closed Won.

A deal with ARR above a threshold moves to Closed Won. The sales channel gets a celebration post with deal details, owner, and amount. The CRM is the trigger source; Slack is the surface. Native Slack Workflow Builder cannot do this.

At-risk account alerts

Health score drops.

An account's health score drops below threshold. The CSM channel gets an alert with the account, the signals that dropped the score, and a link to the record. Timing is immediate, not daily batch.

Approval request in Slack

Discount above threshold.

A deal with discount above threshold needs manager approval. The approval request posts to Slack with Approve and Deny buttons. The decision writes back to the CRM. The deal stage advances or stalls based on the decision.

SLA breach escalation

Ticket sitting past target.

A support ticket sits past SLA target. The support manager's channel gets an escalation post with the ticket, the agent, and the current status. The escalation routes to a second channel if not acknowledged.

Rep daily digest

This morning's priorities.

Each rep gets a morning digest in Slack with their day's priorities: queue count, hot leads, meetings scheduled, deals needing attention. The digest reads from the CRM; Slack is the delivery surface.

Lead inbox alerts

High-score lead just arrived.

A new lead with score above threshold triggers a Slack ping to the owning SDR with the lead details and a "Call now" link. The ping fires within seconds of the lead landing. Speed-to-lead gets compressed to minutes.

The Strkr approach to Slack workflows

CRM triggers, Slack surface.

Strkr integrates with Slack to let the CRM own the trigger and Slack own the surface. The pattern inverts the native Slack Workflow Builder shape: workflows live in Strkr, notifications and interactions happen in Slack.

Trigger in Strkr

Record event starts the workflow.

The workflow trigger is a CRM record event: new lead, deal stage change, health score drop, ticket breach, scheduled time. The trigger fires within milliseconds of the event. State persists in Postgres.

Slack notification step

Rich message, channel or DM.

A Strkr Flow step posts to Slack: specific channel or direct message, with rich formatting, buttons, mentions, and threaded replies. The notification carries CRM context (record link, field values, action buttons).

Action buttons

Click posts back to Strkr.

Slack message buttons post back to Strkr when clicked. The click updates the record (approve deal, close ticket, acknowledge alert) and advances the workflow. Users act without leaving Slack.

Approval workflow

SLA-enforced, audited.

Approval requests post to Slack with Approve and Deny buttons. The workflow pauses until the signal lands. Timeout rules escalate. The approval logs with actor, timestamp, and decision. Compliance review runs one query.

Digest delivery

Scheduled Slack messages.

Scheduled Strkr Flows post digest messages to Slack: morning rep queue, weekly leadership roll-up, monthly board recap. The content reads from the live record graph at send time.

Audit trail

One log for both sides.

Every Slack interaction (notification sent, button clicked, approval decision) logs to the Strkr audit trail. The record of what happened in Slack lives in the CRM audit, not split across two systems.

Lead speed-to-touch

60-second ping to the SDR.

New lead with score above threshold arrives. Strkr enriches, scores, assigns to the right SDR. Within 60 seconds, the SDR gets a Slack DM with lead details and a "Call now" link. Speed-to-lead baseline compresses from hours to under 2 minutes.

Closed-won celebration

Deal pop in the sales channel.

Deal above threshold moves to Closed Won. The sales channel gets a formatted post with the AE, the amount, the segment, and the close reason. Team visibility and morale lift. The post logs to the audit trail.

Discount approval

Manager approves in-channel.

Deal with 20-percent-plus discount triggers approval. Manager's channel gets a request with Approve or Deny buttons. Click updates the deal, advances the stage, logs the decision. Average approval time drops from days to hours.

Renewal flag

CSM gets 60-day heads up.

Account 60 days from renewal triggers CSM Slack DM with health summary, risk signals, and prep tasks. CSM owns the save motion before the exec review cycle. Renewal save rate climbs.

Support SLA escalation

Breach pings manager, not customer.

Support ticket breaches SLA. The support manager's channel gets an escalation with ticket, agent, status. The customer never experiences the breach; the escalation happens internally. SLA compliance climbs.

Daily rep digest

Morning queue in Slack.

6 AM scheduled Flow pulls each rep's day: open opportunities needing attention, hot leads, scheduled meetings, follow-up tasks. The digest posts to each rep's DM. Reps work the queue starting from their phone before standup.

Comparison to Slack Workflow Builder

When to use each tool.

Slack Workflow Builder and Strkr-plus-Slack are not direct competitors. They serve different scopes. Here is when to use each.

Slack Workflow Builder

Slack-contained rituals.

Team standup prompts, PTO requests, pizza orders, kudos, channel welcome. Workflows that start and end inside Slack with no CRM data. The native tool is free, built-in, and the right pick.

Strkr-plus-Slack

Cross-surface workflows.

Workflows that trigger on CRM events and surface in Slack. Lead alerts, deal celebrations, approval chains, SLA escalation, scheduled digests. The CRM owns the state; Slack is the user surface.

Both at once

Lightweight plus heavy.

Teams run Slack Workflow Builder for Slack-contained rituals alongside Strkr-plus-Slack for CRM-centric workflows. The two tools serve different scopes; using one does not displace the other.

Common questions

What buyers ask about this feature.

How is Strkr-plus-Slack different from Slack Workflow Builder?

Scope. Slack Workflow Builder handles Slack-contained workflows: standup prompts, PTO requests, team rituals. Strkr-plus-Slack handles cross-surface workflows where the CRM triggers and Slack surfaces: lead alerts, deal celebrations, approval chains, SLA escalation. The two tools are complementary rather than competitive. Teams typically run both for different workflow scopes.

Does Strkr require a Slack premium plan?

No. The Strkr-Slack integration works with Slack Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise Grid. Features like scheduled messages, interactive buttons, and threaded replies work across all Slack plans. Advanced Slack features (Enterprise Key Management, SSO) interact normally with the Strkr integration.

Can we route Slack notifications to specific users or channels?

Yes. Flow steps post to specific channels, specific users via DM, or dynamic recipients based on record fields (post to the deal owner, DM the CSM assigned to the account, alert the manager of the ticket's owner). The routing is a native Flow step with full logic access to the record graph.

What happens when a Slack button is clicked?

The click posts back to Strkr with the button value, the clicking user, and the record context. The Flow resumes from the paused step with the signal. The action can update the record (approve a deal, close a ticket), advance the workflow (continue the approval chain, trigger the next step), or terminate the workflow (deny the request, mark the alert handled). Every click logs to the audit trail.

Can we handle approval chains that need multiple approvers?

Yes. An approval workflow posts to the first approver with Approve or Deny buttons. On approval, it advances to the next approver with a new post. Each decision logs with actor and timestamp. SLA rules escalate stalled approvals. The chain completes when all required approvers approve, or terminates when any approver denies. The audit trail captures the full chain.

How does the integration handle Slack Enterprise Grid?

Strkr supports Slack Enterprise Grid with multi-workspace routing. A Flow can post to channels in different workspaces based on routing rules (customer-specific channels in different workspaces, team-specific channels per department). The integration respects the Enterprise Grid permission model so Flows cannot post to workspaces outside their configured scope.
